- Story Text: The leaders of Croatia and Yugoslavia have arrived in
Sarajevo to participate in a summit during which they are
expected to sign an historic agreement with Bosnia, designed
to improve relations between the three countries.
A landmark summit to rebuild peace, trust and trade
among three states torn apart the Balkan wars will start on
Monday (July 15).
Hope for this summit to achieve a breakthrough solution
was great on the streets of the Bosnian town of Pale.
"There must be some co-operation. Many years have passed
since the war ended and we cannot stay on this level we must
look to the future and move forward," one man said. And
another one added: "I think that this summit will result in an
improvement of political and economic relations between the
two countries."
But on the streets on Sarajevo, the mood was a bit more
subdued.
"I don't expect anything to come from the summit," said one
man. "Serbian policy hasn't changed much since the war stopped
so I don't expect anything," said another.
Meanwhile in Sarajevo the presidents of Yugoslavia,
Bosnia and Croatia have arrived for a talks.
It was the first top-level three-way meeting of the main
countries in the Bosnian and Croatian wars, and it was held in
the city whose 43-month siege by Bosnian Serb forces
encapsulated the mass bloodshed and ethnic strife of that era.
Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica, his Croatian
counterpart Stjepan Mesic and Bosnia's three-man inter-ethnic
presidency were expected to agree to cut barriers to free
trade and movement, and co-operate better against organised
crime.
Relations between the main protagonists of the Balkan wars
have thawed since the ouster of Milosevic in 2000 and the
advent of reformists in Zagreb. But distrust lingers and
co-operation is patchy in many realms, such as helping
refugees to return.
The leaders were scheduled to hold talks through the
morning and issue a joint declaration at about 1 p.m.
(1100 GMT).
