- Story Text: There are renewed fears that lava flows spewing out
from Mount Etna could reach the nearby town Linguaglossa.
Lava flows exuding from fissures on Sicilys Mount Etna
may still be of concern, experts said on Thursday evening
(October 31).
The flows that have been pouring down Europes most
active volcano since Sunday after seismic activity jolted the
volcano awake, were believed to have slowed down. But new
fears have arisen that the flow could reach the popular
ski-resort of Linguaglossa.
One of the lava arms is now moving 20-30 metres/second
and is judged to be 5 kilometres from the
town. The flow has moved 3 kilometres in the last three days.
Soldiers and members from the civil protection units
have been frantically mounding earth in front of the lava to
form a a natural protective barrier that measures some 15
metres in height.
If the lava continues in a straight line the town of
Linguaglossa will be saved, if within the next 200 metres
the lava is allowed to flow to the right it could hit a river
bed with a direct line down into the centre of town.
We are making this earth barrier to try and stop the
lava flow reaching the riverbed said the head of the civil
protection unit Vanni Cali.
