- Story Text: Emergency aid trickles into Aceh province after a
devastating tsunami killed thousands.
Emergency aid trickled into Indonesia's Aceh
province where it is feared in excess of 10,000 people may
have died from a tsunami.
"We have to ensure availability of food and medical
supplies, and sanitation facility especially because an
epidemic could strike even tomorrow if the problems with
sanitation were not taken care of. We're also sending
reinforcement of medics," Vice President Jusuf Kalla said
on Monday (December 27) after returning from Banda Aceh.
The provincial capital of Aceh bore the brunt with
10,000 people feared dead by Sunday's (December 26)
earthquake-triggered tsunami that struck of the coast of
Sumatra.
"In Banda Aceh itself we estimate about 5,000 to 10,000
people killed and there were just too many houses
destroyed," Kalla said.
The U.N. has warned of epidemics within days across
southern Asia if health systems could not cope, saying the
effects of disease could be as bad as the tsunami itself.
