- Story Text: German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's pledge to slash
unemployment by this year's election has come back to haunt
him as data showed January jobless numbers above the explosive
four-million level.
The Federal Labour Office on Wednesday (February 6)
said unadjusted unemployment, the data most often quoted in the
German media and thus the most politically sensitive, rose to
4.289 million in January from 3.964 million in December.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's conservative
opponents, ahead in opinion polls, have rounded on news of
rising joblessness in recent months, attacking the chancellor
for failing to fulfil a promise to get unemployment down to
3.5 million during his four-year term.
"This chancellor has crushed people's hopes and we will
not be able to get rid of that reputation. He is now the 4
million chancellor," said Friedrich Merz, floor leader of the
opposition CDU/CSU parties.
As Europe's largest economy, high unemployment in Germany
signals bad news for recovery prospects across the euro zone
and comes on the same day as Spain reported that its jobless
rate rose to 9.68 percent in January from 9.23 percent in
December.
Traditional industries like carmaking still form the
backbone of the German economy, and Federal Labour Office
chief Bernhard Jagoda said slow industrial growth would keep
hitting the labour market for the time being.
"I would like to say that we are counting on an increase
of half a million in the winter quarter and it can not be
ruled out that we see a marginal increase for the month of
February. I can not rule that out," he said.
