- Story Text: President Pompidou of France on Wednesday (5 July) named M. Pierre Messmer as the country's now Prime Minister. The president made his announcement four hours after M. Chatan-Delmas--Prime Minister for the past three years--presented his resignation, and that of his government, at the President's request.
The new Prime Minister is 56, and a staunch Gaullist.
Reports from Paris say M. Messmer will announce his government in a few days. Political pundits in the French capital say his appointment probably indicates that President Pompidou is likely to take a granter hand in running the country.
M. Messmer's life has been marked by several spectacular episodes. As a Free French here he hi-jacked a ship--and later he made an adventurous escape after being captured by the Viet Minh in post-war Inde China.
Under General de Gaulle, M. Messmer served nine years as France's Defence Minister. His greatest achievement was in winning the confidence of army generals at the same time as President de Gaulle was granting independence to Algeria.
