- Story Text: Three of the 17 remaining yachts in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race set off from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Wednesday (March 6), on the fourth and final leg of the race.
The three yachts were Copernicus and Otago from Poland, and the West German yawl, Peter von Danzig.
The final leg is a 5,500 mile (8000 kilometre) journey form Rio to Portamouth in southern England. The other fourteen yachts are setting off on Friday, Sunday and Monday (8, 10 and 11 March). The starts are being staggered in the hope of achieving a close finish off the south-coast of England.
The crews were loading up busily on Wednesday morning, but the start was messy. None of the three had reached the starting line when the gun went off and they set off twenty minutes late.
The overall leader over the first three legs is the Mexican Ketch Sayula II In second place is the British Yacht Adventure.
