- Story Text: RESTRICTION : NONE INTRO: - Old guard Spanish fascists have gathered alongside skinheads in Madrid in memory of the 21st anniversary of the death of Europe's last fascist dictator, General Francisco Franco.
"I came here to commemorate Franco's death, I miss the calmness we had when he was alive, we had a better life," Mar Dominguez said at Sunday's (November 24) rally.
Demonstrators came waving Spanish flags and singing the Nationalist Spanish Civil War battle hymn "Cara al Sol" (Face to Sun). They stood in front of the Spanish capital's last remaining statue of the old leader who died in the early hours of November 20, 1975.
Although the number of Franco supporters is diminishing, several hundred people turned out for the Sunday demonstration.
Participants chanted and raised their arms in salute to show their approval for the nationalist speeches.
The majority of the demonstrators were aged about 60, many of them wearing the yellow and red national colours of Spain. They were joined by groups of skinheads too young to even remember the dictator.
Demonstrators said that they came to protest the direction that Spain was taking. "As long as Spain won't have a person representing the force of the people we (Spaniards) are completely lost," Andres Fernandez del Pozo said. The police turned out in force, but reported no violence. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
