- Story Text: Beatlemania returned to London on Thursday as fans of Sir Paul McCartney awaiting his first album signing for 34 years, besieged a record store.
Police had to link hands to hold back the crowds outside HMV in London's Oxford Street on Thursday (October 16) afternoon, as Sir Paul unveiled a model of trademark dog Nipper in the window.
Arriving 20 minutes late but looking cheerful, Sir Paul sang a line of "It's Now or Never" to the delighted crowd.
Many fans had camped overnight to make sure of their place in the queue to meet the former Beatle in a signing which marked the re-opening of the store after a #5 million sterling refurbishment.
"The thing about this place is it's one of the places we made one of the first Beatles records, so I had to come here, didn't I?" he said.
In fact it was at HMV's other Oxford Street store where Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager, gave an early demo tape to producer George Martin, the introduction which launched the Beatles' career.
Inside the store, hundreds of fans screamed just like in 1963 as Sir Paul arrived, speaking to each fan before signing copies of his albums "Flaming Pie" and recently released orchestral work "Standing Stone". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
