- Story Text: Brazil's Emerson Fittipaldi, who leads the standings in the World Driving Championship, believes that victory in the West German Grand Prix on Sunday (July 30th) could give him the title.
But yesterday (Friday) in practice, Fittipaldi was pushed into third place in a day of exceptionally fast driving. Fastest of all was Belgian Jacky Ickx, who clipped a full 10 seconds off the official lap record at Nuerburgring -- a time set last year by Francois Cevert of France.
Cevert, driving a Tyrrell-Ford, returned the second fastest time yesterday. But towards the end of practice, his car veered off the track and crashed. Unhurt but stunned, Cevert feared he would have to use a reserve car in Sunday's race.
Fittipaldi's time over the 22.8 kilometre (13.8 mile) course was 7 mins 14.9 secs -- 4.9 seconds slower than Jacky Ickx.
