- Story Text: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seiesmology (phivolcs) reports seismic activity in the crater of mt. Pinatubo has increased remarkably over the weekend.
The institute has also reminded the public that a level five alert, the highest, continues to be in effect.
The latest monitoring by the scientists indicates that magma is rising to the suface and the lava dome is continously getting bigger.
Evacuation centres around the volcano continue to overflow with evacuees. The latest government statistics, one year and three months after Pinatubo erupted in June 1991, show over a million people have been displaced by lavar streaming from the slopes of the volcano or floodwaters overflowing the heavily silted rivers.
Property damage is calculated at 11 billion pesos (usd 440 million) in 61 towns, and two cities over six provinces. At one of the evacuation centers in Pampagna, at Clark air base, Commander General Benito Diamos said "we are accommodating 1,200 families or 5,400 persons".
Philippines President Fidel Ramos has sought international aid to deal with the disaster. On Sunday (october 4) the Indonesian navy Training ship Kri Dewaruci arrived in Manila for a two day visit. The 140 officers, crew and cadets have collected donations for the Pinatubo victims.
The Barquantine sailing ship is on a training cruise in Asian waters. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
