- Story Text: INTRO: Heavy fighting erupted around the eastern Zairean town of Goma on Thursday (November 14) between rebels and their Hutu foes holed up in the teeming refugee camp of Mugunga.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Journalists were kept away from the front line but the fighting appeared to be directly linked to the planned deployment in the area of a Canadian-led multinational force, diplomatic and other sources said.
Mortar, anti-aircraft and heavy machinegun fire rocked the area around the camp about 10 km (six miles) west of the town on Rwanda's border.
Most of the fire appeared to come from the rebel side with controlled and occasional volleys from multi-barrelled rocket launchers on strategic Mount Goma overlooking the area.
But mortar rounds came out of the sprawling camp -- five km (three miles) across -- where thousands of fighters mingle among a huge concentration of Hutu refugees. The fighting eased after several hours.
The fighting erupted as news broke in Goma that Canada and the United States, key members of the multinational force being prepared to intervene in eastern Zaire, will not disarm the Hutu fighters when they bring aid to the 1.2 million refugees displaced by a month-long rebellion.
Hundreds of refugees continued to pour into Goma on Thursday.
Eight hundred displaced Zaireans reached Goma by boat and many reported cholera and heavy battles between rebel and Hutu forces to the west.
Meanwhile Zaire hit out at the international community's plans to deliver humanitarian aid for stricken refugees in eastern Zaire saying that it should be sent to Rwanda and Burundi so that refugees from those countries are encouraged to return home.
In a speech to a United Nations (U.N) World Food Summit in Rome, Zaire deputy prime minister Mutombo Bakafwa Nsenda accused the international community and Rwanda and Burundi of "total indifference" to the problem and said Zaire was being unfairly blamed for the crisis.
In Zaire, 100 tonnes of humanitarian aid supplies arrived at Kinshasa airport. A consignment of aid supplies including medicines, blankets and food were delivered to the UNICEF warehouse. The aid supplies, which arrived in an Antonov cargo plane from Denmark, will be later distributed to displaced Zaireans. The aid arrived as Zaire's deputy Prime Minister Mutombo Bakafwa Nsenda told a World Food Summit in Rome that aid should be sent to Rwanda and Burundi to encourage ethnic Hutus to return home. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
