- Story Text: INTRO: The five-nation Contact Group on former Yugoslavia has begun a one day session in Moscow amid fears that fighting may yet break out again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Foreign ministers of the five-nation Contact Group on former Yugoslavia began a one-day session in Moscow on Saturday (March 23) amid fears that fighting may break out again in the Balkan states.
The Contact Group includes the United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Russia, France, Germany and Britain.
Opening the session, Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov said the meeting was another important step towards the solution of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin told participants of the meeting that the peace process in Bosnia was at a crucial stage. "There's still a long way to go to genuine reconciliation," he said.
Chernomyrdin said that the international involvement and endeavours to secure the agreements would determine the fate of the peace process. Central to this, he added, was the need to help the civilian rebuilding process.
The Dayton Peace Accord, backed by a 60,000-strong NATO implementation force, has so far stopped the fighting, but the civilian terms have lagged behind in an atmospher of deep trus.
Many of those whose homes fall under the rule of former foes have fled under pressure from their own side or in fear of persecution by the other. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
