- Story Text: Four hundred Palestinian police officers are standing by to take charge of the West Bank town of Hebron - under Israeli rule for the last thirty years.
Israel has begun moving military equipment out of the town in advance of the redeployment of its troops following the peace deal with the Palestinians.
The Palestinians will control 80 per cent of the volatile town of Hebron when Israeli troops finally move out, probably by the weekend.
The contingent will be made up of 200 police and 200 members of the paramilitary National Security Forces.
At the nearby Dahariya police office recruits were handedout uniforms and equipment on Thursday (January 16) before they take up their new posts.
Unlike the forces that took over six West Bank towns in 1995 under a self-rule deal and Jericho in 1994, Palestinian police will have a difficult task keeping order in a town where Arab and Jew will continue to rub shoulders along an invisible line between the two parts of Hebron.
Some 20,000 Palestinians will remain under Israeli rule in the area where about 400 militant Jewish settlers opposed to the Hebron deal live or study. Most settlers are armed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
