- Story Text: Indonesia arrests four key suspects in embassy blast.
Indonesia's police have arrested four key suspects, including an alleged bomb-maker, in September's blast that killed 10 people outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta, police chief Da'i Bachtiar said on Wednesday (November 24).
The four men were identified as Rois, Hassan, Apuy and Ansori. Local media reported the arrest of Rois, also known as Iwan Darmawan, on Tuesday (November 23), but police had refused to confirm the reports.
"We have arrested four suspects linked to bomb in Kuningan street", Bachtiar told a news conference, adding they had been on a wanted list with 500 million rupiah ($55,450) rewards each.
Another man who was not on the wanted list, but is believed to have helped make the powerful car bomb used at the embassy, has also been arrested, Bachtiar added.
"Sogir's bomb was tested outside the Australian embassy on September 9," Bachtiar said.
Police suspect Rois planned the bombing with two of Asia's most wanted men, Malaysians accused of being top agents of the al-Qaeda Jemaah Islamiah militant network.
"Iwan alias Rois alias Hendi played a key role as a recruiter for Heri Golun and others who were ready to be the suicide bomber, and provided them with military training. He also helped plot the bombing, as well as finding a place to hide for Noordin M Top and Azahari, find the house to make the bomb, buy a minivan and provide a house for the suspects after bombing," said Bachtiar.
Bachtiar said his men found ammunitions and bullet in the bags of the four suspects. They also carried bomb attached to their bodies when they were arrested.
Police have said they believe the bombing was the work of British-educated Malaysian engineer Azahari Husin and fellow countryman Noordin Top, both fugitives wanted in connection with previous bombings linked to Southeast Asian militant network Jemaah Islamiah.
Azahari is believed to be the chief bomb-maker for the al Qaeda-linked group. He is also accused of building the bombs used in last year's attack on the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta that killed 12 people, and the 2002 Bali nightclub blasts that killed 202, many of them foreign tourists.
Police blame both those attacks on Jemaah Islamiah.
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country.
While the vast majority of Muslims are moderate, it was criticised by other countries for not taking the threat of violence seriously enough before the Bali blasts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
