- Story Text: Three key opposition factions boycotted the Russian parliament's new autumn session on Friday (October 7).
The Communist and Agrarian factions joined a boycott called by ultra-nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky and insisted on a full debate on the uneasy relations between the executive and legislative branches of power.
The crisis was triggered by Zhirinovsky, who accused Yeltsin's government of victimising his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). He said he would boycott the session of the State Duma until further notice.
Zhirinovsky complained of an incident on Monday involving his charter aircraft.
The LDP leader told the Duma he had not been allowed to make a stopover in the Siberian city of Kemerovo on his way to North Korea.
He said the refusal to allow his plane to land by airport authorities was politically motivated.
Zhirinovsky said the incident was the last straw in a government-orchestrated campaign against his party.
The representatives of the Communist and Agrarian faction, which together with LDP control over 180 seats in a 450-seat legislature, told the chamber they were joining the protest by refusing to take part in parliamentary votes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
