- Story Text: An Israeli security guard killed an Arab and seriously wounded another on Monday (January 16) as they delivered goods in a Jewish area of Jerusalem.
An Israeli police spokesman said the guard opened fire when he thought the men's truck was about to run him down at an Israeli school in the Bayit Vagan area of the city.
Both men suffered serious wounds and were taken to Hadassah hospital where Abed Joulani, aged 25, later died. The other victim, a 20-year-old who has not been named, was in a fair to serious condition. The guard, also unidentified, is being questioned.
Meanwhile, Jewish settlers in the West Bank planted trees on Monday (January 16) to celebrate the Jewish holiday Tu Bi-Shevat, which commemorates the New Year of the trees.
Just outside the Jewish settlement of Efrat, on the hill on which a new Jewish neigborhood will be built, settlers planted saplings and waved Israeli flags.
Near Oranit on the West Bank, Palestinians protested over a Jewish settlement built on land they claim was confiscated, but Israeli soldiers sent them back to their villages.
A group of Jewish extremists celebrated the holiday by trying to break into the sensitive Temple Mount area in Jerusalem to pray at a 1,300-year-old Islamic shrine, but were arrested by Israeli police.
The group of 13 Jewish activists, including Yehuda Etzion who has been jailed in the past for membership of a group accused of killing Arabs, was taken away for questioning. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
