- Story Text: Japan and Russia's leaders meet after APEC summit to discuss economic and humanitarian issues.
The leaders of Japan and Russia met in Singapore on Sunday (November 15) after the conclusion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev held a bilateral meeting where they both expressed a desire to forge stronger ties between their countries.
Medvedev said he hoped to tackle economic and humanitarian issues.
In an earlier bilateral meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, Medvedev had said Russia was unhappy about the pace of disarmament talks with Iran and said that other means could be used if discussions did not yield results.
Hatoyama later delivered a foreign policy speech on Asia, where he stressed the need for more regional cooperation.
"I attach the greatest importance to the promotion of concrete cooperation in a broad range of areas such as trade, investment, finance and education," Hatoyama said.
He said trade was just the tip of the iceberg.
"We can also work together in such fields such as nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, cultural exchanges, social security, and urban issues," Hatoyama said.
APEC leaders concluded their meetings in Singapore, vowing to achieve free trade goals and resist protectionism. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
