Summary:The voice of Winston Churchill officially announces what everyone knows. The day is May 8 1945, and it is Victory in Europe Day. After almost six years of war, the people of London and the rest of Europe went out on the streets and cheered. Vast crowds of civilians and servicemen gathered outside Buckingham Palace to see King George VI and his family make an appearance on the balcony overlooking the Mall. Other massive crowds blocked Whitehall and stood to acclaim Churchill and his war cabinet. As Churchill had reminded them in his broadcast, the war in Asia against the Japanese was still raging, but for one delirious day, London welcomed its first official day of peace in 65 months.
