- Story Text: Russian beauty company L'Etoile names fashion designer John Galliano, who was fired by Dior for anti-semitic behavior in 2011, as their new creative director.
Russian perfume and cosmetics retailer L'Etoile on Thursday (May 22) announced that British designer John Galliano, who was fired by Dior in 2011 after he was caught on camera making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris cafe, has been named the new Creative director.
The announcement was made following a dance and musical presentation at a lavish party in Moscow, where Galliano walked on stage with a company executive and was only seen in silhouette amid blaring spotlights.
The company first made the announcement on its website, where it posted the statement "John is Back!".
In January 2013 Galliano made an attempt to come back to the fashion business with a temporary residency at Oscar de la Renta.
His sudden departure from the star position at one of the world's most recognized labels shook the fashion industry and left LVMH, a multibillion-dollar luxury goods conglomerate, without a creative leader at its top couture line for months.
A French court handed out a 6,000 euro ($8,000) suspended fine to Galliano in 2011 after he was found guilty of anti-Semitic behaviour.
Galliano said he has been in recovery from alcoholism and that several years before he had spiraled out of control and hurt people, especially the Jewish community, as a result of his illness.
The famed designer was considered by some as one of the most talented and creative names in fashion design, with a reputation for drama and theatrical beauty in his shows. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
