- Story Text: Thai soldiers and police scuffled with anti-military protesters on Sunday(May 24) as they tried to gather at the Victory Monument in Bangkok to hold a rally to denounce the coup.
The protesters held banners calling for an end to the coup and General Prayuth Chan-ocha who instigated the putsch on Thursday (May 22) following two days of inconclusive talks with key political leaders who have been at odds with each other.
Many of the protesters had initially gathered in front of a shopping mall in another part of town. The group then set off for Victory Monument in downtown Bangkok where another group had said they would demonstrate.
Security forces tried to block them from reaching their destination but, they took detours to reach Victory Monument.
The protests come as Prayuth detained ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her aides on Friday (May 23) as well as key political leaders on Thursday.
Military officials have said everyone would be released in seven days. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
