- Title: VATICAN: SCIENTISTS FROM TEN COUNTRIES INCLUDING THE USSR AND THE USA DISCUSS THE NUCLEAR ARMS PACE AND SPACE WEAPONS.
- Date: 29th January 1985
- Summary: VATICAN: SV Roald Sagdeev, head of Soviet delegations to the Pontificial Academy of Science talks on nuclear arms and space weapons. (English SOT) SAGDEEV: (SEQ 1) "My conclusion, and the conclusion of the group of scientists which work at my institute in Moscow; it's the leading space institute in Russia, is that it would not deter, that it would probably trigger even escalation int he nuclear arms pace." REPORTER: "Do you think that your meeting at the Vatican City will have any impact on the Geneva talks between the Soviet Union the United States?" SAGDEEV: "I would not be sufficiently modest if I were to say that it would, but I think that this kind of meeting is ... not only this, particular group; politicians, scientists, military people. There is a lot of meetings everywhere. It is a very hot issue. I think that the delegations of the two sides would consider seriously the outcome of such meetings." REPORTER: (SEQ 2) "Do you think your meetings over the last few days in the Vatican will have any influence over the meeting between the United States and the Soviet Union in Geneva?" CHAGAS: "Well I would like to think so, very much. I am not sure what is going to happen, but the important thing is that the American people and the Russian, Soviet people should pressure their governments against the arms race." REPORTER: "Do you think that the 'star wars' concept would be one hundred percent effective the moment it's put up into space?" CHAGAS: "No, that I cannot. I think it's very difficult to believe that it will be one hundred percent effective. I think that my feeling is the same as the greatest of the specialists in the field." SCU Carlos Chagas, President of the Pontificial Academy of Science speaking. (English SOT) 2.10

Scientists from ten nations including the Soviet Union and the United States met in Vatican City for four days of discussions on the nuclear arms race and space weapons from January 21-25. The discussions took place under the auspices of the Pontificial Academy of Science which advises the Pope on scientific matters. The scientists issued a statement calling for a ban on space weapons as an essential requirement for preventing a further arms race from developing. Speaking to a Visnews reporter on January 26 Roaldo Sagdeev, head of the Soviet delegations said that the introduction of space weapons would increase the likelihood of an escalation in the arms race. On the same day, Carlos Chagas, President of the Pontificial Academy, said that he did not believe that such weapons would prove an effective defence against nuclear weapons. Chagas added that he would like to see citizens of the Soviet Union and the United States pressuring their respective governments against the arms race.
