- Story Text: A media circus formed in front of the Los Angeles County jail on Monday (June 4) where hotel heiress Paris Hilton is serving a 23-day sentence.
Hilton turned herself in a day ahead of her court-ordered deadline. She was booked into the Century Regional Detention Facility on Sunday (June 3) night just hours after making a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards.
Hilton was arrested for drunk driving in September 2006. In January, she pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of alcohol-related reckless driving. She was sentenced to three years' probation and had her license suspended.
But the heiress was caught driving in February. A traffic court judge ruled on May 4 that Hilton's latest offense was a probation violation and sentenced her to 45 days in jail. The sentence was later reduced to 23 days for good behaviour.
The official jail picture shows Hilton wearing a white V-neck top, complete eye make-up and lip gloss.
Hilton's attorney, Richard A. Hutton visited her in jail and later said: "She's doing very well under the circumstances. The staff here has reported that she has been gracious, polite, thankful for their help with her. We came in last night, early, rather than create a public spectacle tomorrow morning. That was Paris's request to demonstrate that she takes this very seriously.
"She did not want to make a media circus out of this event."
As with other celebrities, the media follows Paris' every move. Television producers covering the "Paris Hilton goes to jail" story told Reuters that they are responding to the desire of the public to know everything about her life.
"I think people are just fascinated by Paris," said "Inside Edition" producer Daela Citrone. "This is a person who's lived in wealth and privilege all her life. And people want to follow her, her ups as well as her downs."
And the curiosity about Paris Hilton knows no bounds. People across the globe keep an eye on what she is doing.
"She's not only famous in the United States but all over the world," noted German journalist Anna Tietz. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
