Ma was welcomed in Guatemala by his counterpart Alvaro Colom who described the relationship in warm terms.
"Guatemala and the Republic of Taiwan have had commercial relations since 1935, diplomatic relations since '54. It's a long and deep relationship. It's a long and deep friendship and a long and deep solidarity. Today we're celebrating your visit, the people and the Guatemalan government, sure that these ties of freedom will last a lifetime," he said.
Ma arrived in Guatemala after visiting Belize. He will travel next to El Salvador where he will attend the inauguration of Mauricio Funes on Monday.
He is expected to meet with the presidents of Honduras and Nicaragua before returning home.
