- Story Text: Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou delivered $5 million of aid to Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive on Thursday (January 28).
Ma said the aid was an initial donation as the Caribbean country tries to recover from the January 12 7.0-magnitude earthquake that leveled much of its capital.
"Taiwan is small however, when these international disasters strike, we want the love of Taiwan to be known on an international level," Ma told reporters. "We want this to be a pilot plan, an initial donation of 5 million U.S. dollars that could go up to 10 million. The most important thing isn't the amount, but that the Haitian people can return to their lives as soon as possible. We know it's a long path to walk it that could take more than 10 years, but be prepared because we greatly appreciate our relationship with the Haitian people and government and we want other countries to join our effort."
Taiwan had previously donated a plane full of medical supplies for Haiti.
Ma stopped in the Dominican Republic on his return trip home from attending the inauguration of Honduran President Porfirio Lobo.
He told reporters in Honduras that his government was considering assisting Haiti with rebuilding efforts and was mulling over suggestions that international banks and governments forgive debts to the Caribbean nation.
