- Story Text: Chinese and Indonesian foreign ministers met in Jakarta on Friday (August 10) as part of a Chinese tour which hopes to resolve the South China Sea dispute.
Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, saying the visit was all part of a bid to enhance relations in the region.
"The main purpose of my current visit is to promote the in-depth growth of this strategic partnership between China and Indonesia and between China and ASEAN, and to enhance our cooperation on international and regional affairs," he told reporters after the meeting. ASEAN is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Natalegawa confirmed the South China Sea issue had been discussed, but gave no details.
"The issue was discussed principally in a private setting and so I have no wish, and no right, in a way, to provide the detail of my discussion. But what I can assure colleagues, is that diplomacy is very much on track," he said to reporters after the news conference.
The South China Sea has become Asia's biggest potential military flashpoint, as Beijing's sovereignty claim over a huge, looping area has set it against countries including Vietnam and the Philippines as they race to tap possibly huge oil reserves.
China is a member of the East Asian Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum.
