- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: Egypt's contribution to peace in the Middle East was praised by Mrs. Simone Veil, the President of the European Parliament, when she addressed the Egyptian Assembly in Cairo on Sunday (6 December). Mrs. Veil is on a five-day visit as a guest of the Parliament and had held discussions with Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak.
SYNOPSIS: Mrs. Veil was warmly received in the Egyptian Parliament by its speaker, Dr. Soufi Abu Taleb, before she stepped on the podium.
The European Parliament President repeatedly referred to the contributions of the assassinated Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat. She said that the European Parliament had acted on his wish by passing a resolution noting Egypt's natural role as a friend of the European Community. She was sure that President Mubarak had the same confidence in the Community as Anwar Sadat had in regard to its contributions towards peace in the Middle East. In a separate meeting with Mr. Mubarak, the European leader said she hoped the way would be cleared for Europe's participation in the Sinai peacekeeping force which is to witness Israel's withdrawal from the peninsula next April. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
