- Story Text: Residents in the northern National Front stronghold of Henin-Beaumont woke on Monday (April 24) to news of the success of far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen in the first round of the country's election.
Locals in the former mining community voted overwhelmingly for Le Pen in Sunday's (April 23) election, with 46.5 per cent of votes there cast in her favour. Independent centrist Emmanuel Macron, who also made it through to the second round, got just 14.86 per cent of the vote in the town and came in behind far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon.
Patrons arriving for their morning coffee in "Cafe de la paix" all spoke of the election result. Salesman Bruno Breisacher said he had voted for Le Pen purely as a protest vote. Social worker Didier Lespagnol said Macron, who is a former investment banker, represented "money and banks".
Nationally, Macron gained 23.74 per cent of the votes against Le Pen's 21.53, interior ministry final figures showed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
