- Story Text: Turkish police use water cannons and fire smoke grenades at Kurdish protesters, demonstrating against Turkey's military operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
Thousands of Kurds took to the streets of Diyarbakir on Sunday (July 11) to protest against military operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the killings of Kurdish rebels in clashes with the Turkish army.
Clashes erupted when angry protesters hurled stones and firecrackers at riot police, ignoring their orders to disperse.
Police used water cannons and smoke grenades to break up the crowds, as protesters blocked streets with barricades and burning tyres. Police detained ten demonstrators during the protest in Diyarbakir - the largest city in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast.
The PKK took up arms against Turkey in 1984 in a bid for an independent Kurdish homeland.
They have since scaled back their demands to greater political and cultural rights for Turkey's estimated 14 million Kurds.
More than 40,000 people, mainly guerrilla fighters, have died in the conflict. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
