- Story Text: Hooded youths clashed with protesters during a mass march in Athens on Thursday (October 20) against the government's austerity bill being voted on in parliament.
The peaceful protest of tens of thousands was disrupted when the demonstrators began to clash amongst each other.
Hooded youths threw molotov cocktails and smoke bombs at other protesters, who struck back with the flags they were carrying during the protest. Police did not intervene in the beginning, but later stepped in to push back the hooded youths, firing tear gas.
The clashes took place outside the parliament building in central Athens, where the waves of protesters had gathered to oppose the austerity bill, which cuts wages and jobs, in demonstrations organized by the country's main labour unions.
The unions called a strike on Thursday, the second day of labour action. On Wednesday a protest of more than 100,000 erupted in violence for hours with youths throwing petrol bombs and setting fires in the city. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
