- Story Text: Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo will visit North Korea as early as Wednesday (December 1), Kyodo news agency said quoting diplomatic sources in Beijing.
Dai, who advises leaders on foreign policy, is likely to urge North Korea to take part in emergency talks proposed by China.
After an initially quiet response to North Korea's deadly artillery attack on a South Korean island, China has called for emergency meetings among the heads of the countries of the stalled six party talks.
There has been increasing global pressure to rein in Pyongyang, who has recently revealed information about its uranium enrichment for nuclear development.
As North Korea's only major ally, China continues to press the country to abandon its nuclear weapons and has repeatedly urged restraint and fresh talks to defuse tensions along the Korean peninsula.
However new WikiLeaks revelations, purporting to be from U.S. State Department cables and published by several Western papers, raised questions about the future of the relationship between China and North Korea which has in the past been described as being as close as "lips and teeth". - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
