- Story Text: Roger Federer is looking to complete his collection of "grand slam" trophies on Sunday (June 7) by finally winning the elusive French Open title at Roland Garros.
The Swiss plays Sweden's Robin Soderling for the trophy after beating Fernando Gonzalez in the semi-finals. Soderling defeated Federer's main rival, Rafael Nadal, in the quarter-finals.
If he succeeds, Federer will become only the sixth man to have won the four major tournaments, the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open titles, in his career.
Previous career winners are Fred Perry of Great Britain, Don Budge and Andre Agassi of USA, Rod Laver and Roy Emerson of Australia.
Don Budge and Rod Laver are the only men to have won all four titles in one calendar year, with Laver doing it twice; Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver in both 1962 and 1969.
Perry completed his career slam in 1935, Emerson in 1964 and Agassi in 1999.
Federer won his first major, Wimbledon, in 2003 and is still waiting to take the French seven years later, having been runner up in 2006, 2007 and 2008. On three occasions Federer has won three of the events in a year but failed to win the fourth, in 2004, 2006 and 2007.
The four majors feature three different surfaces: the Australian and U.S. tournaments are on hard court, Wimbledon on grass and Roland Garros on clay. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
