- Story Text: Spanish forward Pau Gasol has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA team has announced.
The club did not provide details of the contract in Wednesday's (December 23) announcement, but local media reported that Gasol had agreed to a multi-million dollar, three year extension, keeping him with the team until 2014.
Gasol, from Barcelona, joined the Lakers in February 2008 after spending seven years with Memphis, where his younger brother Marc plays.
He helped the Lakers win the Western Conference twice, as well as the franchise's 15th NBA championship in 2009 and he is a two-time NBA All-Star.
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak described Gasol as one of the best all-around players in the NBA and said he had a significant impact both on and off the court.
Gasol has won world and European championships with Spain and the Olympic silver medal at Beijing.
The 29-year-old, seven-foot (2.13cm) centre was Spanish captain at this year's European Championship, where Spain took gold by beating Serbia 85-63. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
