- Summary: LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (FILE - SEPTEMBER 9, 1996) (CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL) (REUTERS) (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR SIDNEY LUMET, SAYING: "There's a certain world that I know very well. I know street life, I know police life, so it's a sound that I feel very comfortable with, very familiar with. When I have that kind of relationship to it, it's simply easier and faster because there aren't many writers who will know it as well as I do and I'll find myself saying 'They don't say that'. Their language is different." ANDY GARCIA INTERVIEW NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA (FILE - NOVEMBER 28, 1995) (CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL) (REUTERS) VARIOUS OF LUMET ON SET OF "NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN" (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR SIDNEY LUMET, SAYING: "The movie is about what it costs you to stay honest and it's not an easy price and that's what almost everybody in this movie has to do -- has to try to do. They don't succeed, any of them."

- Story Text: Lumet's stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel, said Lumet died of lymphoma at his home in Manhattan, the newspaper said.
Lumet was one of the leading film directors of the second half of the 20th century. He was prolific, directing more than 40 movies, and versatile, dabbling in many different film genres. Lumet often shot his movies in his native New York.
In 2005, he received an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement. He previously had been nominated for Oscars five times without winning: as best director for "12 Angry Men" (1957), "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975), "Network" (1976) and "The Verdict" (1982); and for best screenplay as co-writer of
"Prince Of The City" (1981).
His films, nominated for more than 50 Oscars, typically were unsentimental and extremely well crafted, exploring intelligent and complicated themes. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
