- Story Text: Model trio Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum and Kate Moss top Forbes magazine's list of the 10 top-earning female models on the planet. In the 12 months to May the ladies on the list made a combined $112 million (USD), up 30% from a total of 86.5 million from the previous year.
Klum, Bundchen and Moss have made the bulk of their money off the runway, having swapped catwalks for boardrooms and becoming designers, entrepreneurs and pop icons.
Brazilian born Gisele Bündchen has fashioned herself into a brand. The power of her influence was documented last month when Pantene shampoo sales increased 40% in Latin American once the model began flipping her hair for the brand. And in April she launched her first collection for clothing retailer C&A. Bundchen, who has been starring in C&A campaigns for the past 10 years, has produced a collection 100 outfits, including accessories and shoes.
The magazine says her earnings soared $20 million (USD) over the previous year, topping her off at an estimated $45 million (USD) 12 month gross.
Model turned TV host and producer, Heidi Klum, is a distant second behind Bundchen with an estimated $20 million (USD) in earnings. Like Bundchen, Klum found her fame as a Victoria's Secret Angel. Last year the German beauty ended her 13-year run with the company.
Klum's business ventures include a clothing line with New Balance and Amazon.com and a 20-episode deal hosting "Seriously Funny Kids" on the U.S. network Lifetime. This is in addition to her hosting and executive producing duties on the reality television show "Project Runway."
Although the industry veterans continue to flourish, some say the days of the 'Supermodel' are long gone. Hollywood actors and actress continue to grace covers once held for the fresh new face, thus creating smaller pay days for newcomers. In addition, since the recession companies are continuing to cap spending.
Most of the models on the list have at one time been affiliated with Victoria's Secret. Candice Swanepoel, who made her debut on the list netted $3 million (USD) last year. Industry insiders are touting the South African beauty as the world's next top model.
In total three Brazilians made the list. Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima are both Victoria's Secret regulars, but both have also began to make names for themselves without their Angel wings.
Lima, who raking in an estimated $8 million (USD), recently starred in ads for Spanish luxury brand Loewe. And Ambrosio took over Bundchen's spot as the face of Brazilian sportswear brand Colcci with actor Ashton Kutcher.
Top ten regulars Miranda Kerr, who recently wed actor Orlando Bloom, and Dutch model Doutzen Kroes, both took time off to have children. While their hiatuses keep them off the list this year, the magazine says their lucrative contracts will continue once they're back on the runways.
