- Story Text: Spanish supporters shocked by defeat against Switzerland in the World Cup.
Thousands of Spanish supporters watched in shock as their team was beaten by Switzerland 1-0 on Wednesday (June 16).
A huge crowd gathered near Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu to watch the match televised from South Africa but their hopes turned to bitter disappointment.
Switzerland pulled off the biggest shock of this World Cup when they beat the European champions in Group H on Wednesday, their first ever victory over their opponents in 19 games.
Gelson Fernandes' goal after a mix up in the Spanish defence gave the Swiss a shock 52nd minute lead and Spain, for all their talent and guile, were unable to find a way through the massed ranks of white Switzerland shirts.
In Madrid, one fan said Spain had missed several chances to score and Switzerland, who scored from a rare attack and hit the post in another, could have doubled their lead.
Another fan, Carlos said that he never considered Spain as one of the favourites to win the World Cup.
"I think Germany and Italy are the favourites. They always win the World Cup. And that is what happened to us, we always go as favorites and then we end up being shocked," he said.
The Swiss, who have now not conceded a goal in the World Cup since a 3-0 defeat to Spain in 1994, share the lead in Group H with Chile, who beat Honduras 1-0 earlier on Wednesday.
A hopeful supporter, Carlos said that Spain still been the favorites despite the result.
" Spain played better but what can you do, we lost. We had more chances but you can't always win," he said after the game. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
