- Story Text: The confetti is tested for its air worthiness ahead of the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square.
It is an essential part of the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square. The colorful confetti. In the heart of Times Square, the confetti was tested on Tuesday (December 29) to make sure it floats, flutters, and falls gently to the ground.
The confetti test is just one of the events leading up to New Year's Eve festivities in Times Square, which are expected to draw a crowd of about one million.
"We just tested its air worthiness. It flew very well. It didn't clump. It's very important that it's all cut and it's all lightweight. We had some very strong winds today so it flew down to 42nd Street in a matter of seconds. So, we're ready to go with the confetti," said Tim Tompkins, President of Times Square Alliance.
A new tradition for the organizers of the New Year's Eve celebration is the Confetti Wishing Wall.
This is the third year, people will be able to write down their wish for the new year on a piece of confetti. The confetti wishes will be mixed in with the 3,000 pounds of confetti that will be tossed onto the crowd in Times Square on New Year's Eve. "Because the New Year is about new beginnings and hope for a better future, we've created this wishing wall where people can write their wish for the new year on a piece of confetti," added Tompkins.
People from all over the world have written down their wishes for 2010. Organizers say the wishes have been written in 20 different languages.
"For the new year, I want happiness and health to my family and to all good people in the world," said Irene Nazarenko, a tourist from Ukraine.
"I wished that my dad can walk again, because he is very sick and he's gonna be healthy again," said Maria Wieder, a tourist from Austria.
According to the organizers, hundreds of thousands of individual pieces of confetti will rain on Times Square on New Year's Eve. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
