Because it makes me feel that whatever, you know, the red carpet usually is, which is, you know, hair and makeup, that I've done something bigger than that. That makes me feel good." ACTOR RIZ AHMED POSING FOR PICTURES (SOUNDBITE) (English) RIZ AHMED, ACTOR, SAYING: (THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIVERSITY AND REPRESENTATION) "I mean I guess sometimes as a creative person of color I'm asked about diversity in the creative industry and I think that the word diversity sometimes can be a bit of a misnomer, we need to talk more about representation. Because diversity can sometimes feel like sometimes a bit of an added extra. Like you know, a side dish, the fries to your burger or whatever. But actually it's quite core, it's quite essential to what we expect from stories, from politics. We all just want to feel represented." SINGER JOHN LEGEND POSING FOR PICTURES (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOHN LEGEND, MUSICIAN, SAYING: (ON BEING AN ARTIST AND ACTIVIST) "Well I'm an artist first but I think part of our job as an artist is to be truth tellers and to reflect what's going on. And Harry (Belafonte) that Paul Robeson told him that artists are gatekeepers of the truth, and if we're able to entertainment people but also inspire them and help make the world a better place then I think that's a great thing for artists to do." VARIOUS OF ACTRESS SARAH PAULSON POSING FOR PICTURES ON RED CARPET ACTRESS SARAH PAULSON AND HOLLAND TAYLOR TALKING ON RED CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) SARAH PAULSON, ACTOR, SAYING: (ON BECOMING A WELL-KNOWN IN DEMAND ACTRESS) "It's been a surreal experience, I won't lie. It's not something I'm entirely comfortable with only because it makes you have to confront your deep seated comfort in the struggle and how long I felt like I was trying to make a mark, or be seen. And all of a sudden now I feel like I don't have to do that as much anymore. And I sort of I'm not sure how to identify myself in that - without fighting for it." DESIGNER RAF SIMONS POSING FOR PICTURES ON RED CARPET WITH JEAN-GEORGES D'ORAZIO (SOUNDBITE) (English) RAF SIMONS, DESIGNER, SAYING: (ON THE ELECTION OF TRUMP) "When you are European and you move everything, you move away from your parents, from your friends, it's a big decision to work in a new continent for an American company. It is kind of confronting to be part of a political shift." [REPORTER QUESTION: "Are you adjusting?" (SOUNDBITE) (English) RAF SIMONS, DESIGNER, SAYING: "We have to, we have to be very positive I think and we have to kind of, you know, whatever happens you always have to kind of make the best out of it." DRAG QUEEN RUPAUL WITH GEORGES LEBAR ON RED CARPET NAOMI CAMPBELL POSING FOR PICTURES ON RED CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) NAOMI CAMPBELL, MODEL, SAYING: (INFLUENCE ON THE FASHION INDUSTRY) "I think Ru's influence has been tremendous, I think he's helped so many people, more than he'll ever know." JOURNALIST GRETCHEN CARLSON POSING FOR PICTURES CARLSON SPEAKING TO REPORTERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) GRETCHEN CARLSON, JOURNALIST, SAYING: "The idea that a movement of sorts has been created is unbelievable to me and so empowering. And it's not just about sexual harassment. Women are standing up and speaking up more than ever now and they're saying they're not going to be bullied, we're not going to settle for not being paid equally, we're not going to be quite in the board room, we're not going to be quite about getting promotions." LATE NIGHT HOST TREVOR NOAH SPEAKING TO REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) TREVOR NOAH, LATE NIGHT HOST, SAYING: (IS COMEDY EASY WITH TRUMP IN OFFICE) "I think comedy in the age of Trump is evolving, you know it's going from a place where it is all ridiculous and hypothetical, to a place where it's real and still ridiculous in many ways. But obviously the sentiment has changed. Some people are living a life where they are more afraid, some people are living with the reality that they never thought they would be living with. But at the same time I find people are coming together." - Story Text:Time magazine celebrated its 100 most influential people of 2017 at its annual gala in New York on Tuesday (April 25).
Celebrities and newsmakers shared space on the list that is divided into five categories; pioneers, artists, leaders, titans and icons.
The selection of the influencers is a year long process and involves every journalist at the publication looking for those who change the way we look at the world and communicate with ours.
This year's list included NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who made headlines by refusing to stand for the U.S. national anthem before football games, Oscar winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, and plus-size model, Ashley Graham.
Actress Viola Davis said being included on the list helped her feel good about where she is at this point in her life.
"It makes me feel that whatever, you know, the red carpet usually is, which is, you know, hair and makeup, that I've done something bigger than that. That makes me feel good."
