- Story Text: Christie's previews items for their country music auction.
Country music items up for an auction next week were on display for a preview at Christie's in New York on Monday (November 23).
Musicians performed Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash songs among others, playing the guitars that these artists had once used.
Christie's is calling this the first sale dedicated to the creation, history, and evolution of country music. The sale consists primarily of items from the estate of Texas Swing Band leader, song writer and performer Hank Thompson.
With that foundation, head of the department of musical instruments, Kerry Keane, urged other clients - musicians and collectors from Nashville, Dallas, and Austin, to find other memorabilia and make this a true country music sale.
"I think country music certainly is an indelible mark on American popular culture. It is along with rhythm and blues, it's the foundation for rock and roll music. As rock and roll in England couldn't have happened without skiffle music, here in America, it couldn't have happened without country and without rhythm and blues. What we are telling in this sale is the story of country music and how it morphs into rock and roll," Keane said.
The biggest draw is expected to be a Gibson guitar owned by Buddy Holly and is expected to sell for an estimated $450,000-$550,000. According to Keane, Holly bought this second hand and embellished it with a hand carved leather cover. The idea for the cover was inspired by Elvis Presley.
Other items at the auction includes a couple of Johnny Cash guitars, and suits and boots worn by the artist. His black Fender Malibu guitar is expected to sell for an estimated $40,00-$60,000 dollars.
Guitars and outfits worn by country music singer Roy Rogers and his wife Dale Evans were also on display. The suits designed by Nudie Cohen, embroidered and set with rhinestone glitter was used by Roy Rogers for his stage performances.
