- Story Text: Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich on Friday (October 18) condemned the apparent burglary of a Russian embassy staffer's apartment in The Hague.
"At night on October 17, upon returning home from work, employees of the Russian Embassy in the Netherlands who live in a multi-story apartment building located off the Embassy premises, discovered the signs of illegal entry into one of the apartments. The resident of the said apartment, a member of the administrative and service staff of the embassy, is currently away on vacation. The Dutch authorities were notified about this immediately," Lukashevich said.
Lukashevich called on Dutch authorities to carry out a full investigation.
"The police arrived at the site quickly and began the investigation right away. Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans expressed his apologies for to the incident. We expect the Dutch authorities to do everything within their power to identify the offenders," he said.
The burglary comes at a tense time for Russian-Dutch relations as Moscow and The Hague are already at odds over the detention in Russia of Greenpeace activists, including two Dutch citizens.
Earlier this month, Dutch authorities apologised for detaining a Russian envoy in his home, and on Wednesday (October 16) Russia expressed regret over the beating of Dutch diplomat in his Moscow flat by unknown intruders and said it would seek out the culprits. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
