- Story Text: Haiti awoke on Tuesday (February 2) to the start of the third week after a devastating 7.0 earthquake that ravaged much of Port-au-Prince and left hundreds of thousands living in the street, struggling to obtain basic necessities like food, water and medicine.
Haitians queued outside immigrations services in an continued effort to leave the country while many others went about their daily search for much needed relief.
On Monday, the U.S. military resumed medical evacuation flights of critically injured earthquake victims to the United States, ending a five-day suspension caused by a dispute over where to treat patients and who would pay for their care.
The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and two other U.S. ships were leaving Haiti after completing their relief missions. Several other U.S. warships remained offshore to support the operation.
The UN said Monday it could take Haiti decades to recover, but that the tragedy provided an opportunity for Haitians to rebuild their country "the right way." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
