- Story Text: German Defence Minister Thomas De Maiziere continued his three-day visit to the region on Wednesday (July 13), visiting sites in Jerusalem and meeting Israel's top military echelon.
De Maiziere paid a visit to Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust museum, where he participated in a memorial ceremony for six million Jews murdered by the Nazis during World War Two. The minister lit the memorial flame and laid a wreath on a crypt containing ashes of some of the Nazi's victims.
Earlier on Wednesday, De Maiziere met Israel's chief of staff Lieutenant general Benny Gantz for talks on the unrest in the Middle East and the Iranian nuclear threat.
He is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before returning to Berlin on Thursday (July 14).
De Maiziere's visit came just days after German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government sealed a deal -- according to media reports confirmed to Reuters by Saudi security sources - to sell 200 Leopard 2 tanks to Saudi Arabia.
Media reports also said Israel and the United States were briefed on the deal and voiced no concerns. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
