- Story Text: Madrid welcomed a new and unusual hotel on Thursday (January 20) in the heart of its commercial centre off the busy Gran Via.
The Corona Save the Beach Hotel, designed by German eco-artist H.A. Schult, has no intentions of competing with The Ritz or any luxury hotel: it's built using 12 tonnes of garbage collected from the beaches of Spain, Italy, France and Belgium, rubbish dumps and flea markets.
The goal of Schult's installation is to raise awareness of the damage consumerism has on the world beaches.
"We must know and we must understand that the oceans are the biggest garbage dumps of the world," Schult told Reuters Television. "The garbage of Europe meets the garbage of Australia, the garbage of South America meets the garbage of North America, in the oceans."
The concept of the garbage hotel, the German artist says, incapsulates the message he is trying to convey.
"The world is a hotel and so as a parable, I show the world as a hotel, and this world we only have rented and we have to realise that we in this time fill up the whole world with garbage," he explained.
The the initiative in central Madrid has been organised by Corona, the Mexican beer brand, and has the support of the international Blue Flag Programme of the non-profit Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) which certifies beaches or marinas that meets its stringent environmental standards.
"What we are showing here today is the negative impact, if you actually don't take care of your beach," said Sophie Bachet, international co-ordinator of International Blue Flag. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
