- Story Text: Gert-Jan Stok, a businessman from the Netherlands decided three weeks ago to break both the Guinness and World records for building a tower out of champagne glasses. Both the Guinness record and World record were set by Dutchmen and, if Stok wins , will be broken by a Dutchman again. "The Guinness book record is 30.865, and the world record is 35.000 glasses. We got to break the world record. Guinness record is very important for us, but the world record is a real record, said Gert-Jan Stok to Reuters on Tuesday (January 10). Four young people spent three days building the tower of glasses, working from 7 am until midnight. The whole idea came from Gert-Jan's wish to improve the financial situation of EMMA Hospital, which specializes in treating children with life-threatening diseases such as cancer. "The most important thing is that we gonna sell every glass for EMMA Hospital in the Netherlands. It's a hospital where they treat children for serious disease, and where they make the stay of the children a lot better, Gert-Jan Stok added. Jeroen Van Craaikamp is a team leader for this project, ensuring nothing goes wrong for Wednesday (January 11), when the last glass will be placed on top and the records will be broken. "When something goes wrong, not everything will break. Two or three thousand glasses could break, and that's not something that can't be fixed on time." The champagne tower can be seen until Thursday (January 12) at Amsterdam's RAI, Parkhall 8, at the yearly HORECA show. The tower will be 7 meters high and it will contain 990 champagne glasses.
