- Story Text: STORY : Champions League winners Milan played the role of birthday guests as fellow legends Dynamo Kiev celebrated their 80th birthday on Thursday (September 6).
Watching Ukranian President Victor Yushchenko said: " I want to thank you Dynamo Kiev for 80 years of your history and you built a beautiful football legend. " Then club legends Oleg Blokhin, Andriy Shevchenko and Igor Belanov kicked off the match.
The game , watched by an estimated 15,000 crowd in the Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium ended 2-2 . The home side went into a 2-0 lead through Artem Milevskiy and Goran Gavranovic, but Milan, including stars Cafu, Emerson and Nesta, drew level thanks to Alexexandre Pato, a recent signing from Internacional of Brazil, and Alberto Gilardino.
The club, formed in 1927 as an amateur team, became officially funded by the NKVD, a predecessor of the KGB.
It entered legendary status through its consistent ability to challenge the dominance of the Moscow clubs in Soviet soccer.
It did this so successfully that it won a record 13 USSR championships before independence 15 years ago. There were also European honours , with victories in the 1975 and 1986 European Cup Winners Cups. The club also has a tradition of producing great players, from Valeriy Lobanovskyi in the 1960s, all-time Soviet top scorer Oleg Blokhin, and current Chelsea star Andriy Shevchenko. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
