The Latvian government held an emergency meeting on Monday (October 12) to decide over possible upcoming budget cuts ahead of a visit by EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner, Joaquin Almunia.
Almunia is due to arrive in Latvia on Tuesday (October 13).
The Latvian government is under pressure to raise budget cuts to 500 million lats [1 billion U.S dollars] ahead of next year in order to meet its agreement with the EU to receive 7.5 billion euros [11 billion U.S dollars] of emergency loans.
Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis said last week his coalition would meet today in an attempt to find ways to extend 325 million lats [$677.5 million U.S. dollars] of cuts previously agreed upon for 2010. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
