- Story Text: Iraq's elite Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) troops on Thursday (December 1) pressed on with the assault of Mosul, Islamic State's last major urban stronghold in the country.
The battle for Mosul has already raged for over six weeks. An alliance of Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led air power, have surrounded it and elite troops have seized eastern districts, but face deadly and determined resistance.
On Thursday the CTS troops, also known as the Golden Division, continued their push to retake al-Qadissiya neighbourhood in eastern Mosul.
Intermittent gunfire and thuds of explosions could be heard and smoke could be seen rising from the neighbourhood.
The troops have already retaken 11 neighbourhoods in the eastern parts of the city, according to military commanders, and are pushing to reach the bank of the river Tigris. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
