- Story Text: History enthusiasts dressed up in period outfits met up in a field in Tvarozna, Czech Republic on Saturday (December 3), to re-enact one of the 19th Century's most famous wars.
Back in 1805, on December 2, one of the most significant Napoleonic wars, the Battle Of Three Emperors - also known as the Battle of Austerlitz - took place not far from today's Moravian capital of Brno in the Czech Republic.
Pitted against the Russian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, Napoleon's victory is regarded by many historians as his most impressive.
Over 65,000 French soldiers defeated the greater numbers of the combined forces of the Russian and Holy Roman empires. About 18,000 troops died from both sides in just the one day of fighting.
"Today we are reconstructing just one part of the battle - the fight of the Prasec hillock, which was the decisive fight. People will see another part of the battle this year and I expect that, thanks to good weather, they can also get nice photos," said organiser Miroslav Jandera.
Napoleonic era expert, Professor Oleg Sokolov, who teaches at the Sorbonne University in Paris, talked about similarities between this year's reconstruction and the real battle 211 years ago.
"The weather was practically the same as today. Only the morning was more foggy and it was colder - below zero. The fog was covering the ground till 8-8.30 but it was bright sunny weather like today," he said.
This year, more than one thousand costumed soldiers from 17 countries, with over 60 horses and 18 cannons, took part in reconstruction.
Canadian actor Mark Schneider, who portrayed Napoleon, pointed out the importance of the event.
"For me, I think it is important to tell the story, the history. I often say the great quote of the historian Santiana who says: 'Those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it'. It is not important to celebrate the death, the battle, but to remember the history, otherwise we will not be able to prepare us for the future," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
