- Story Text: France's new prime minister Bernard Cazeneuve and his ministers had their first cabinet meeting on Wednesday (December 7), a day after he was appointed by President Francois Hollande to replace Manuel Valls, who quit to run for president after Hollande himself decided against seeking a second term.
Cazeneuve will be the shortest-serving head of state in the history of France's Fifth Republic.
He will play caretaker ahead of next year's vote, where Marine Le Pen's anti-immigrant, anti-European Union National Front hopes to repeat anti-establishment upsets seen earlier this year in Britain, the United States, and this week in Italy.
"I want to be a prime minister who, in the coming months, at every moment and with great selflessness, will have only have one concern - with a sense of the general interest, a sense of the state, and the strengthening of our country's assets - to allow us to succeed in the global competition," Cazeneuve said after the cabinet meeting.
Cazeneuve wanted each minister to be focused on his task, with the objective of being productive in the coming five months, government spokesperson Stephane Le Foll said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
