- Story Text: The death toll from a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia's Aceh province has killed more than 100 people, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said on Thursday (December 8).
"A total of 102 people were killed, one is missing, 136 have sustained serious injuries, 616 people have minor injuries, and 3,276 people were evacuated," said the agency's spokesperson, Sutopo Nugroho.
Rescue efforts resumed in Indonesia's Aceh province on Thursday morning, while medical teams struggled to treat the hundreds of injured as supplies trickled slowly into the area.
More than 1,000 personnel, including military officers and volunteers, have been deployed to help in search and rescue operations, the agency said.
Local hospitals are overloaded with injured patients and medical personnel and supplies are in high demand, Nugroho added.
Traffic congestion around the epicentre in Aceh's Pidie Jaya regency was also slowing the delivery of logistical and medical supplies sent by government agencies and NGOs.
The earthquake on Wednesday (December 7) was the biggest disaster to hit the province on the northern tip of Sumatra island since the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, which killed more than 120,000 people in Aceh alone.
A 14-day state of emergency has been declared in the province, which sits on the northern tip of Sumatra island.
Experts said the quake did more damage than expected because of poorly-constructed buildings. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
