- Story Text: Quake survivors in Indonesia on Saturday (December 10) hoped to move on as they started to clean up the debris after a powerful earthquake jolted and killed 100 people.
Thousands were left homeless as hundreds of buildings crumbled down following the 6.5 magnitude quake in Indonesia's Aceh on Wednesday (December 7), it was the worst disaster to hit the region since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Many residents, mostly Muslims, are now taking shelter in local mosques.
"We hope it will get better. As a Muslim, like many of us here, we should be faithful to God and be kind to others, or else disaster as such will happen again. It was God's punishment for us, in the past we had tsunami and now, earthquake," said Jamil, who is staying at a temporary shelter at the mosque.
Over 700 people were injured and official from National Disaster Management said rescue operations were nearing an end.
"We hope the central government will provide help for us so that we can start a new life," said Darwin Daud, another local who has lost his home to the quake.
The province of Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra island, has declared a two-week state of emergency and the central government has pledged aid for recovery efforts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
